John L. Bretz

John Lewis Bretz (* September 21, 1852 in Huntingburg, Dubois County, Indiana, † December 25, 1920 in Jasper, Indiana ) was an American politician. Between 1891 and 1895 he represented the State of Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Bretz attended the public schools of his home including Huntingburg High School. Between 1876 and 1880 he worked as a teacher. After studying law at the Cincinnati Law School, and in 1880 made ​​his admission to the bar he began in Jasper to work in this profession. Between 1884 and 1890 he was a prosecutor in the Eleventh Judicial District of Indiana.

Politically, Bretz member of the Democratic Party. In the congressional elections of 1890 he was in the second electoral district of Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of John H. O'Neall on March 4, 1891. After a re-election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1895 two legislative sessions. In 1894 he was not re-affirmed.

After his retirement from the U.S. House of Representatives Bretz worked as a district judge in Pike County and Dubois County. This post he held between 1895 and his death. In 1900 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Kansas City, was nominated on the William Jennings Bryan for the second time as a presidential candidate. John Bretz died on December 25, 1920 in Jasper, and was buried in Huntingburg.
