John Leech (caricaturist)

John Leech ( born August 29, 1817 in London, † October 29, 1864 ibid. ) Was a British illustrator and cartoonist.

John Leech made ​​his first book illustrations by known and worked since 1847 for the famous British satirical magazine Punch.

To have enjoyed no systematic art education, he soon developed into an outstanding cartoonist who portrayed with fondness the London folk life in humorous illustrations and lashed out at the excesses of fashion.

He also has numerous novels, sports books and almanacs illustrated and delivered over 50,000 sheet drawings. His cartoons are free filled with rawness and of a higher artistic pursuit. A selection of his drawings was published under the title: Pictures of life and character ( new ed 1881).
