John M. Coghlan

John Maxwell Coghlan ( born December 8, 1835 in Louisville, Kentucky, † March 26, 1879 in Oakland, California ) was an American politician. Between 1871 and 1873 he represented the state of California in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

In 1847, John Coghlan moved with his parents to Illinois. Two years later the family moved during the Gold Rush to California, where they settled in Suisun City. He attended the public schools of his respective home. After a subsequent study of law and qualifying as a lawyer, he started in Suisun City to work in this profession. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Republican Party launched a political career. In the years 1865 and 1866 he sat as a deputy in the California State Assembly.

In the congressional elections of 1870, Coghlan was in the third electoral district of California in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of James Augustus Johnson on March 4, 1871. Since he has not been confirmed in 1872, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1873. After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives John Coghlan again practiced as a lawyer. Between 1876 and 1878 he was a federal prosecutor for the northern part of California. He died on March 26, 1879 in Oakland, where he was also buried.
