John M. McHugh

John Michael McHugh ( born September 29, 1948 in Watertown, Jefferson County, New York ) is an American politician ( Republican).

Education

McHugh 1966 graduate of Watertown High School. Subsequently, he attended the Utica College, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1970. Later he went to the Nelson A. Rockefeller Graduate School of Public Affairs at the State University of New York at Albany, where in 1977 a Master of Public Administration received.

Political career

Early years

McHugh was 1971-1977 as Assistant to the Town Clerk of Watertown. He then worked as an adviser to Senator Hugh Douglas Barclay 1977-1984 and then his successor. He fell here until his election to Congress in the State Parliament.

Congressman

McHugh ran successfully in 1992 for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. displaced there MP David O'Brien Martin in the 24th electoral district, which was renamed in 2000 after the census 23 constituency. Historically, this part of New York was republican in congress level, but was last hotly contested in the presidential election. McHugh was the highest-ranking Republican on the House Armed Services Committee and a senior member of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee. He had six years to preside over the Oversight Committee 's Subcommittee postoffice and in 2006 was involved in the passage of laws that should the United States Postal Service ( USPS) reform. This was the first reform, since the old U.S. Post Office Department had lost his Cabinet status with the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act ( PL 109-435 ). McHugh was the only one of eight Republican incumbents in New York, over 60 % of the vote took 2006. The other seven were either defeated or have less than 60 % of the vote brought against their Democratic challengers. McHugh continued in 2008 with 65.3 % of the vote through to Democrat Mike Oot.

Secretary of the Army

On 2 June 2009 he was nominated by U.S. President Barack Obama for the position of Secretary of the Army. He was sworn in on 21 September 2009 as the 21st Secretary of the Army. His Congress mandate fell after a by-election to the Democrat Bill Owens.
