John M. Wood

John M. Wood ( born November 17 1813 in Minisink, Orange County, New York, † December 24, 1864 in Boston, Massachusetts ) was an American politician. Between 1855 and 1859 he represented the state of Maine in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Wood attended the public schools of his home and was then in railway construction in New Jersey operates. In 1846 he moved to Portland in Maine. There he worked in the railroad business. He also went into the banking industry and the newspaper business. From 1853 to 1857 he published the newspaper " Portland Daily Advertiser ". From 1852 to 1853 he was a delegate in the House of Representatives from Maine.

Politically, Wood joined the Republican Party, founded in 1854. In the same year he was appointed as the first candidate in the electoral district of Maine in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC selected. There he met on March 4, 1855 the successor to the Democrats Moses Macdonald. This Wood was one of the first Republicans in Congress. After a re-election in 1856 he was able to complete two terms 1859 to March 3. These were overshadowed by the discussions and events leading up to the Civil War.

After his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Wood worked again in the railway business. He was (Connecticut) involved in the construction of the connection between Woonsocket in Rhode Iceland and New Haven. John Wood died during a visit on December 24, 1864 in Boston.
