John Mackey (Roman Catholic bishop)

John Mackey CBE ( born January 11, 1918 in Bray, Ireland, † January 20, 2014 in Auckland, New Zealand) was a Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland.

Life

John Mackey moved at the age of seven years with his widowed mother from Ireland to New Zealand; they lived with his uncle O'Byrne, a Catholic priest.

He studied philosophy and theology at the National Seminary of New Zealand Holy Cross College in Mosgiel and received on 23 November 1941, the ordination. He completed a master's degree in Church History and received his doctorate in education. He had a Fulbright Scholarship and holds a Graduate Scholarship from the U.S. University of Notre Dame. Mackey was a long -time director for the education, training and development of the Diocese of Auckland.

On April 25, 1974 Pope Paul VI appointed him. Bishop of Auckland and it gave on 30 June 1974 in Rome the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were the Curia Archbishops Giovanni Benelli and Duraisamy Simon Lourdusamy.

He was professor of church history at Holy Cross College, the national seminary of New Zealand and the University of Otago. He has been dealing with the history of education and training in New Zealand. In 1975, he was able to successfully integrate the Catholic school system in the New Zealand school system.

On 1 January 1983, Pope John Paul II took his resignation for health reasons. In the years after Mackey was still working as a professor and guest speaker. He died in January 2014 after a short illness at the age of 96 years.
