John Madden (ice hockey)

John Joseph Madden ( born May 4, 1973 in Barrie, Ontario ) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player and current coach, who during his active career, among other things, for the New Jersey Devils, Chicago Blackhawks, Minnesota Wild and Florida Panthers of the National Hockey League played. Since November 2013 he has been an assistant coach for the Florida Panthers.

Career

From 1993, John Madden went to the University of Michigan. He was not drafted until then by an NHL team. He played four years for the ice hockey team of the college and won several times the championship of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, and in 1996, the NCAA Division I championship. In addition, the award of the CCHA Division came in 1997 as a striker with the best defensive qualities.

1997 Madden wrote as a free agent a contract in the NHL with the New Jersey Devils, came in the first two years, but almost exclusively for their farm team, the Albany River Rats in the American Hockey League action. In the 1998/99 season he was four times for the Devils on the ice. In the AHL, the Canadian convinced with very good results scorer. In his second season he scored 98 points in 75 games of the regular season.

From the season 1999/2000 he was an integral part of the NHL squad the Devils and won with them once the Stanley Cup. In the following season, reaching the striker to the Devils, the Stanley Cup final, which they lost narrowly, however, against the Colorado Avalanche. Madden quickly established himself in the NHL and, after two years in the league, the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the best defending striker. In 2003 and 2004 he was again nominated for the Selke Trophy Frank J.. In summer 2003, Madden was in his third Stanley Cup Finals and won with the Devils for the second time in his career, the Stanley Cup.

During the lockout and the consequent failure of the NHL season 2004/ 05 the Canadians moved to Finland in the SM- liiga to HIFK Helsinki, but completed only three games. Prior to the 2005/06 season team captain Scott Stevens resigned, which is why the management of the New Jersey Devils decided to award the "C" for the time being at any player and instead aground only alternative captains, including Madden belonged. On April 25, 2006 he received his first hat trick in the playoffs against the New York Rangers succeeded. He scored two goals in the minority. In the 2009/10 season he won with the Chicago Blackhawks the Stanley Cup. For him, it was the third title of his career. In summer 2010, he signed a one year contract with the Minnesota Wild.

After a season, he was not given a new contract, so that the striker in the summer of 2011 was available as a free agent. In January 2012, Madden agreed on a contract with the Florida Panthers. After completion of the 2011/12 season he finally ended his playing career.

John Madden was one of the best defending strikers in the NHL and was regarded as a specialist in number situations.

Following his playing career Madden took over the position of assistant coach with the Florida Panthers in November 2013.
