John Madden

John Earl Madden ( born April 10, 1936 in Austin, Minnesota) is a former American football coach and player. He coached the Oakland Raiders in the National Football League ( NFL), and is one of the best coaches of NFL history. Today he is better known as a football commentator and writer.

Career as a player

Madden first played college football at California Polytechnic State University. He played in both the Defense, as well as on offense. In 1958 he was selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 21st round of 244 instead of the NFL Draft. Due to a knee injury suffered in training camp, however, he was never in the NFL used.

Career as a coach

Madden began his coaching career at various college teams. Most recently he was responsible as an assistant coach for the Defense of the team of the San Diego State University. Madden was hired by the Oakland Raiders as an assistant coach ( responsible for the linebackers ) 1967. As the then coach John Rauch in 1969 left the club and went to the Buffalo Bills, was promoted to head coach John Madden, a position he held until 1978. His greatest success as a coach was in 1976, when he led his team to win the Super Bowl. His track record is one of 103 wins and just 32 losses and seven draws.

Career as commentator

As a commentator Madden worked from 1980 to 2009 more. Than 20 years stood him while Pat Summerall to the side. The last common commented game was the Super Bowl XXXVI.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame, was inducted into the Madden 2006, honored him in 2002 with the Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award.
