John Martin (Kansas)

John Martin ( * November 12, 1833 in Hartsville, Trousdale County, Tennessee, † September 3, 1913 in Topeka, Kansas ) was an American politician (Democratic Party), who represented the state of Kansas in the U.S. Senate.

Life

John Martin attended the public schools of his home town and worked as a clerk in shops and at the post office. In 1855 he moved to Tecumseh in the Kansas Territory, where he was appointed Deputy Secretary ( Assistant Clerk ) elected territorial House of Representatives. From 1855 to 1857 he worked in the administration and in the Land Registry Office of the Shawnee County. After studying law in 1856 Martin was admitted to the bar and began to practice as a lawyer in Tecumseh; the following year he became a justice of the peace.

In the following years John Martin took over numerous other offices at the municipal and territorial level. He was district attorney of Shawnee County ( 1858-1860 ), postmaster of Tecumseh ( 1858-1859 ), Deputy Attorney General for Kansas ( 1859-1861 ) and court clerk at the Supreme Court of Kansas ( 1860). In 1861 he moved on to Topeka, where he worked again as a lawyer.

Policy

John Martin's political career began with membership of the House of Representatives from Kansas 1871-1875 In 1876 he applied unsuccessfully for the office of governor.; also in the election for U.S. Senator for Kansas in 1877 he lost the first Republican Preston B. Plumb. After a term as district judge 1883-1885 another defeat followed in his candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1888, he finally lost for the second time the gubernatorial election.

After the death of Senator Plumb on December 20, 1891, Martin appeared on the following year for election to its mandate; provisional Bishop W. Perkins had become the successor. This time he was victorious and moved into the Congress on March 4, 1893. During his two -year tenure, he served as Chairman of the Railway Board. After his time in the Senate from 1897 to 1899, Martin was still working as a court clerk at the Supreme Court of Kansas. He died in 1913 in Topeka.
