John Mayasich

John Edward Mayasich ( May 22nd 1933, Eveleth, Minnesota ) is a retired American professional ice hockey player and coach. As a high school and college player he belongs in Minnesota among the best players of all time, with the U.S. national team, he won at the Olympic Winter Games 1960, the gold medal. From 1959 to 1971 he was a player and coach of the Green Bay Bobcats.

Career

Mayasich grew up in Eveleth and played as a student in the ice hockey team of Eveleth High School. He led his team 1948-1951 to four titles at the state tournaments and won all 69 games in his high school career. In addition, he holds several records as the best single player in high school hockey in Minnesota. Even as a football player, he was successful and, after leaving school a scholarship to the University of Minnesota. There, however, he played exclusively in the ice hockey team. In 111 games with the Golden Gophers, he scored 144 goals and gave 154 assists. Twice he was appointed to the All-American team. 1954 was the team in the NCAA Final Four, but in the final documents the Gophers in overtime against the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with 4:5. After graduating in 1955 Mayasich fulfilled his military service. He was appointed to the U.S. national team and won at the Olympic Winter Games 1956 in Cortina d' Ampezzo with the U.S. team the silver medal. His greatest success was achieved Mayasich 1960, when he won the Olympic gold medal at the Olympic Winter Games in Squaw Valley with the U.S. team for the first time. In 14 games at Olympia in total he scored 13 goals and nine assists. In addition, he was at the World Championships in 1958, 1961, 1962 ( 3rd place ), 1966 and most recently in 1969, when the U.S. team finished in last place and knocked off relegation in the B group, the national team.

Mayasich suggested a career as a professional player. In 1958 he went to the Green Bay Bobcats, a team of the Central Hockey League and the United States Hockey League was associated with later. For this he played until 1971, partly in dual role as coach. On the side he worked in Green Bay with a television company. In addition, he then worked from 1959 to 1966 player-coach of the Bobcats and as general manager of the team. In January 1971, he took on a transitional basis until the end of the season again as coach. As a player, he scored over 200 goals and more than 300 assists for the Bobcats.

After the end of his career Mayasich worked in Minnesota for a media company. In 1976, he was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame and in 1997 into the IIHF Hall of Fame. In 1998 he received the Lester Patrick Trophy. His jersey number 8 is not assigned when the Gophers since 1998.
