John McCann (Irish politician)

John McCann ( born June 17, 1905 in Dublin, † 23 February 1980) was an Irish playwright, journalist and politician.

McCann worked as a journalist and wrote dramas for Radio Eireann and later for the Abbey Theatre.

In 1939 he was elected at a by-election for Fianna Fáil in the Dáil Éireann and thus occupied the vacant seat of James Beckett new. In the elections of 1954 to the 15th Dáil Éireann McCann could not defend his position and thus different from from the House of Commons. From 1946 to 1947, and for the second time from 1964 to 1965 he held the office of Lord Mayor of Dublin ( Lord Mayor of Dublin).

His son is the Irish theater and film actor Donal McCann.
