John McCluskey, Baron McCluskey

John Herbert McCluskey, Baron McCluskey, of Church Hill District of the City of Edinburgh ( QC Scotland) ( born June 12, 1929) is a British lawyer and politician who was General of Scotland 1974-1979 Solicitor and since 1976 as Life peer member of the House of Lords.

Life

After visiting the St Bede 's College in Manchester, as well as the Holy Cross Academy in Edinburgh McCluskey graduated in law at the University of Edinburgh and received there in 1950 initially a Master of Arts (MA) in 1952 and a Bachelor of Laws ( LL.B. ).

He joined after graduation and a subsequent military service with the Royal Air Force in the prosecution of Scotland ( Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service ), where he first Advocate in 1955. After his appointment as Advocate Depute 1964 he took charges in the Scottish Supreme Criminal Court ( High Court of Justiciary ) and was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1967 for his services. Later he was Chief Justice from 1973 to 1974 ( Principal Sheriff) at the Sheriff's Court for the judicial district of Dumfries and Galloway.

McCluskey was appointed in 1974 as the successor to William Stewart to the Solicitor General for Scotland and was up to his replacement by Nicholas Fairbairn Deputy Lord Advocate, the General Counsel of the Scottish Executive.

By Letters Patent of September 29, 1976 McCluskey was raised as a life peer with the title Baron McCluskey, of Church Hill District of the City of Edinburgh to the peerage. Shortly afterwards, was his introduction ( Introduction) as a member of the House of Lords. In the upper house he belongs to the Group of the Labour Party, but later moved to the group of so-called Cross Bencher. After the election defeat of the Labour Party at the general election on May 3, 1979, he was spokesman for the opposition Labour Group for Legal Affairs of Scotland.

Following Lord McCluskey served 1984-2000 as a Senator of the College of Justice and thus as one of the judges of the Supreme Court of Scotland. During this time he held in 1986 in the framework of the so-called Reith Lectures Lectures on jurisprudential issues on the radio program on BBC Radio 4, entitled Law, Justice and Democracy ..

Lord McCluskey, the ( Hon. LL.D. ) of 1989 he received an honorary Doctor of Laws University of Dundee, was also from 1997 to 2004 Chairman of the John Smith Memorial Trust and at the same time between 2000 and 2001 Chairman of the elderly charity Age Concern Scotland. He was also from 1995 to 2000 Vice - Chairman of the Human Rights Institute of the International Bar Association (IBA).
