John McEntire

John McEntire ( born April 8, 1970 in Portland, Oregon, United States) is an American drummer, multi-instrumentalist and producer. He was and is, inter alia, a member of the band Tortoise, Gastr del Sol, The Sea and Cake and Bastro, all of which are attributed to the post-rock. McEntire currently lives in Chicago, Illinois, where it has the Soma Electronic Music Studio.

Career

McEntire began at age ten, playing the drums. He later studied percussion and music technology at Oberlin College in Ohio. In 1988, he joined his first band called My Dad Is Dead, but a year later he left to become a member of Bastro. After he had moved to Chicago with David Grubbs and some position change had taken place, the band Gastr del Sol has been renamed. In addition, he founded in 1989, the band Tortoise ( initially under the name Mosquito ), he increasingly devoted himself, as Gastr del Sol was primarily the project of Grubbs and Jim O'Rourke. In 1993, McEntire along with Archer Prewitt, Eric Claridge and Sam Prekop the band The Sea and Cake.

McEntire played with musician friends such as Prewitt, Prekop, Grubbs and O'Rourke on many recordings. He also worked with numerous bands as a sound engineer, mixer or producer. These include Bright Eyes, The Ex, Smog, Eleventh Dream Day, Stereolab, The For Carnation, Dianogah, The Fiery Furnaces and Trans Am. Before he founded his own studio, he worked with Brian Deck ( from the band Red Red Meat ) in the now-closed Idful studios. Together with deck called McEntire 1998 Clava Studio to life.
