John McKenna

John McKenna ( * 1855, † March 1936 ) was an Irish football official, football coach, entrepreneur and rugby players.

Biography

McKenna was together with his colleague William E. Barclay, the first coach of FC Liverpool. He was a millionaire and was on the sporting level, a relatively successful rugby player. He had very good relationships with different club bosses, whether in England or Scotland, which sold him great talents of Scotland. McKenna had also played a key role in ensuring that Liverpool was recorded in the highest English league. Under his leadership, the Reds their first championship game against Middlesbrough Ironopolis played on September 2, 1893, and took it promptly 2-0.
