John Merle Coulter

John Merle Coulter ( born November 20, 1851 in Ningbo, † December 23, 1928 in Yonkers, New York) was an American botanist and founding editor of the Botanical Gazette. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " JMCoult. ".

Life

John Merle Coulter was his brother Stanley Coulter born as a child of missionaries in China, received his school education but at Hover College in Indiana, where his widowed mother in 1853 was returned. From 1872 to 1873 he worked as a botanist for the United States Geological Survey in the Rocky Mountains and then taught science at his old college, before he took over in 1879 a professor of biology at Wabash College in Crawfordsville. In 1882 he was at the University of Indiana to the Ph.D. ( Doctor of Philosophy ) PhD. From 1891 to 1893 he served as president of Indiana University and from 1893 to 1896 he was the Lake Forest College in Illinois before. In 1896 he became head the Department of Botany at the University of Chicago. In 1909 he survived along with his wife Grace and their children Grace and Merle the sinking of the White Star ship RMS Republic in front of Nantucket, in which six people were killed. In 1925 he moved to Yonkers in New York, where the structure of the Boyce Thompson Institute of Botany in Ithaca was involved, the director of the institute he was he.

Honors

In 1909 he was inducted into the National Academy of Sciences. 1920 awarded him an honorary doctorate from Indiana University Law School. Vasey and Rose described the genus Coulterella from the Asteraceae family, the genus Robinson Coulterophytum from the Umbelliferae family in his honor.
