John Michael Uhrich

John Michael Uhrich ( born June 7, 1877 in Formosa, Ontario, † 15 July 1951 in Regina ) was a Canadian politician and physician. For 16 years he was health minister from Saskatchewan, 1948-1951 Vice- governor of that province.

Biography

Uhrich was for a short time teacher in Walkerton and then studied medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago. During the semester break, he taught each to schools in Saskatchewan. After graduating, he moved to this province and opened a medical practice in Hague. As a candidate of the Saskatchewan Liberal Party, he joined in 1921 at the elections to the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan and was successful in the election district of Rosthern.

From 1922 Uhrich was as Provincial Secretary Member of the Cabinet of Charles Avery Dunning, from 1923, he was also Minister of Health. Under his leadership, the number of hospitals has increased. A particular concern of his was the expansion of preventive medicine, which included the control of water and milk, as well as vaccinations against diphtheria and smallpox. In addition, the provincial government took over the cost of the fight against tuberculosis.

Uhrich 1929 Although re-elected, but lost his ministerial post because of the defeat of the Liberals. This came five years later returned to power, after which he took up his former position again. From 1938 he was Head of the Department of Public Works. For health reasons, he resigned in 1944. Governor General Lord Alexander Uhrich sworn on 23 March 1948 as Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan. This representative office he held until his death.
