John Miller (North Dakota politician)

John Miller ( born October 29, 1843 in Dryden, Tompkins County, New York, † October 26, 1908 in Duluth, Minnesota ) was an American politician ( Republican). He was from 1889 to 1891, the first Governor of the State of North Dakota.

Life

John Miller attended the local schools of his home. In 1878, he and his partner, Jeremiah W. Dwight in the Dakota Territory and bought 17,000 acres in the Red River Valley in Richland County. In this country, the Dwight Farm and Land Company was built. Miller was a member of the Republican Party and adopted in 1889 as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention of North Dakota part. In the same year he was elected with 66.8 percent of the vote to Democrat William N. Roach for the first governor of the new state of North Dakota. His first and most important task was to establish a functioning administration. He rejected the introduction of a state lottery from his country. After his two-year tenure Miller verzichetete to a possible re-election.

After the end of his tenure, Miller returned to his farm and organized from 1896, the John Miller Land Company. In 1906 he became president of the newly formed Chaffee -Miller Milling Corporation. John Miller died in 1908. He was married to Addie S. Tucker, with whom he had a child.
