John Morris (geologist)

John Morris ( born February 19, 1810 in Homerton, London; † 7 January 1886 in London ) was a British geologist and paleontologist.

Morris attended private schools and worked for a while as a pharmaceutical chemist in Kensington, then devoted himself but all of geology and paleontology. 1854 to 1877 he was Professor of Geology at University College London.

He is best known for his publication of the Catalogue of British Fossils 1845.

In 1876 he was awarded the Lyell Medal. He was since 1845 a Fellow of the Geological Society. 1868-1871 and 1877-1879 he was president of the Geologists Association. In 1878 he received an honorary Master of Arts from the University of Cambridge.
