John N. Dalton

John Nichols Dalton ( born July 11, 1931 in Emporia, Virginia; † July 30, 1986 in Richmond, Virginia ) was an American politician and from 1978 to 1982 Governor of Virginia.

Early years and political rise

John Dalton studied until 1953 at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg. After a subsequent law studies at the University of Virginia he made there in 1957, his law degree. He then served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army.

Dalton was a member of the Republican Party. In 1965 he was first elected to the House of Representatives from Virginia. After that, he was a total of three times confirmed by the voters as a Member of this Chamber. In 1972 he moved into the state Senate. From 1974 to 1978 he served as Deputy Governor Deputy Governor Mills E. Godwin, whose successor he was elected in 1977.

Governor of Virginia

John Dalton began his four-year term on 14 January 1978. During this period he was also Chairman of the Association of Republican governors and the board of the National Governors Association. He was also a member of numerous other associations and commissions. He promoted the economic growth of his state and reformed the administration. During his tenure, a lawsuit was settled with the federal government over the issue of desegregation in secondary schools.

Dalton's term of office ended on 16 January 1982. Though he was Non smoking, he fell ill with lung cancer, the consequences of which he died in Richmond on July 30, 1986 at the Medical College of Virginia. With his wife Edwina Jeanette tanks of the Governor had four children.
