John N. Dempsey

John Noel Dempsey ( born January 3, 1915 in Cahir, County Tipperary, Ireland; † July 16, 1989 in Putnam, Connecticut ) was an American politician and governor of the U.S. state of Connecticut. He was a member of the Democratic Party.

Early years and political rise

Dempsey visited after his immigration from Ireland Providence College. He then from 1938 to 1949 Member of the City Council of Putnam. He was also the 1946-1948 Executive Secretary of Congresswoman Chase Going Woodhouse. After he was elected six consecutive terms as mayor of Putnam. He was also the 1949-1955 deputy in the House of Representatives from Connecticut. Subsequently, he was from 1955 to 1959 Senior Adviser to the Governor of Connecticut. Dempsey was elected Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut in 1959, a position which he held until 1961.

Governor of Connecticut

Following the resignation of Governor Abraham A. Ribicoff on January 24, 1961 Dempsey took over his duties, and served in that position until 1971. 1969 continued the legislative leaders of both parties to the Legislative Management Act through to set up a knowledgeable support staff and the operating budget of the to control assembly. As Governor Dempsey vetoed the bill, both houses voted unanimously against him and so put his veto overridden, so that the General Assembly has developed into an equivalent government department. By this law, the legislators were no longer dependent on senior services for information or responses of senior party leaders. During his tenure, he was also 1968-1969 worked in the Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations and the National Governors' Conference Executive Committee. Furthermore, he had from 1963 to 1965 presided over the New England Governors ' Conference, and from 1969 to 1970 over the Democratic Governors' Conference.

John N. Dempsey died on July 16, 1989 and was buried at St. Mary's Cemetery in Putnam.
