John Nevett Steele

John Nevett Steele ( born February 22, 1796 in Weston, Dorchester County, Maryland; † 13 August 1853 in Cambridge, Maryland ) was an American politician. Between 1834 and 1837 he represented the state of Maryland in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Steele attended the public schools of his home. After a subsequent law degree in 1819 and its recent approval as a lawyer, he began to work in Dorchester County in this profession. At the same time he managed his plantation Indiantown near Vienna. Between 1822 and 1830 he was several times in the House of Representatives from Maryland. As an opponent of the future President Andrew Jackson, he joined the short-lived National Republican Party. Later he became a member of the Whigs.

After the death of Mr Littleton Purnell Dennis Steele was at the due election for the first seat of Maryland as his successor in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he took up his new mandate on 29 May 1834. After a re-election, he could remain until March 3, 1837 Congress. There was at that time still considerable debate about the policy of President Jackson.

In 1838 John Steele was the candidate of the Whigs for the office of the Governor of Maryland; However, he lost just about 300 votes difference to Democrat William Grason. Otherwise, he devoted himself to continue his plantation Indiantown. John Steele died on August 13, 1853 in Cambridge.
