John Njue

John Cardinal Njue (* 1944 in Embu, Eastern Kenya Province) is Archbishop of Nairobi.

Life

John Njue studied at the seminary in Meru and at the Pontifical Urban University Catholic theology and philosophy and completed his studies at the Urban with the licentiate in philosophy. In addition, he obtained a Licentiate in Pastoral Theology at the Pontifical Lateran University. On January 6, 1973, he received by Pope Paul VI. in Rome, the sacrament of Holy Orders. By activity in the parish Kariokoma in Meru in the Eastern he worked from 1975 as a lecturer at the seminary of Mabanga in Bungoma, from 1982 the rain. In 1983 he became the first African priest in the parish of Chuka. Two years later he became a professor at St. Joseph's Seminary in Nairobi.

On June 9, 1986, Pope John Paul II Njue Bishop of Embu. He received his episcopal consecration Jozef Cardinal Tomko on September 20th of that year. Co-consecrators were Bishop Silas Silvius Njiru and Archbishop Raphael S. Ndingi Mwana a'Nzeki. John Njue was appointed on 9 March 2002 Koadjutorerzbischof of Nyeri. In addition, he was on 16 July 2005 to 25 January 2006 Apostolic Administrator of the Apostolic Vicariate Apostolic of Isiolo and on January 12, 2007 to June 27, 2009 Administrator of the Diocese of Muranga. On October 6, 2007 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him. Archbishop of Nairobi; the solemn inauguration ( enthronement ) took place on 1 November of that same year.

24 November 2007 it took Benedict XVI. as cardinal priest with the titular church Sangue di Nostro Signore Gesù Preziosissimo Cristo in the College of Cardinals.

From August 2009 to January 2012, he was also Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Ngong.

Work

Since 2006 he has been Deputy Chairman of the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa ( AMECEA ).

Njue is chairman of the Kenya Episcopal Conference. For his commitment to the protection of human rights in Africa and for free and fair elections, he received several death threats.
