John of Beverley

John of Beverley John of Beverley or († May 7 721 in Beverley ) was 705-718 Bishop of York. He was later canonized.

John was said to be noble descent and come from Harpham in today's East Riding of Yorkshire. He received his spiritual training at the then Archbishop of Canterbury, Theodore of Tarsus. At times, he also belonged to the convent of Whitby, where he came into contact with the Holy Hilda. 687 he was consecrated bishop of the Northumbrian diocese of Hexham; 705 he was the successor of the ( Holy ) Bosa. He was considered very well-read, a series of letters and homilies attributed to him. 718, he resigned from the office of bishop and retired to the which he founded and later named after him monastery in Beverley, where he died in 721. His successor as bishop was Wilfrid II

He was later canonized. Memorial Day is a day of his death, May 7
