John of Conza

John of Compsa ( Conza ) (Latin: Ioannes Compsinus; * probably in Conza della Campania, † 617 in Naples) was a late ancient rebel in southern Italy.

In the year 615 the Byzantine exarch in Italy, John of Ravenna, was overthrown and killed by insurgents. The still used by Emperor Phocas Dux of Naples, John of Compsa, the rebellion followed. Emperor Heraclius, whose military forces were almost completely bound by the Persian war, installed Eleutherius than 616 new exarch with orders to put down the uprising in Italy. John told the Dukat Naples then for independently by the Emperor. Eleutherius took the city after several weeks of siege 617 and had John beheaded as a usurper.
