John Oliver (bishop)

John Keith Oliver ( born April 14, 1935) is a British Anglican theologian. He was from 1990 to 2003 Bishop of Hereford in the Church of England.

Oliver was the son of Walter and Ivy Oliver. He attended Westminster School and studied at Gonville and Caius College, University of Cambridge. Where he graduated in 1959 with a Master of Arts in Theology from. His priestly career began from 1964 to 1968 as a vicar ( Curate ) in the municipality Hilborough near Norfolk in the county of Suffolk; where he was responsible for several communities. Subsequently, he was from 1968 to 1972 Kaplan ( Chaplain ) and teachers ( Assistant Master) at Eton College. From 1973 to 1982 he was pastor (Team Rector ) in the village of South Molton, Devon. From 1974 to 1980 he practiced there from the office of Dean Country ( Rural Dean ). From 1982 to 1986 he was pastor of a Innenstadtgemeinnde in Exeter. From 1985 to 1990 he served as Archdeacon of Sherborne ( Archdeacon of Sherborne ). At the same time he was in this period canons ( Canon, Canon ) at Salisbury Cathedral. In 1985 he became Rector ( Priest- in-charge; pastor ) of West Stafford in the county of Dorset. In 1990 he was ordained a bishop. It was founded in 1990, as the successor of John Eastaugh, the Bishop of Hereford in the Church often England. In 2003, he went into retirement. After his retirement he has been active since 2004 as a volunteer auxiliary bishop ( Honorary Assistant Bishop) in the Diocese of Swansea and Brecon.

Oliver was 1993-1998 Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Church of England 's Advisory Board of Ministry and Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Rural Support Network in the West Midlands (2003-2007). Oliver was one of the proponents of legalization of cannabis; this caused in the UK for attention.

In September 1961 he married his wife Meriel Edith Moore Milicent, daughter of Sir Alan Hilary Moore, 2nd Baronet Moore and his wife Hilda Mary Burrows. The marriage produced three children, two sons and a daughter. His daughter Mary died in 2002 at the age of 31 years from the effects of alcohol poisoning. His hobbies include railways, music, architecture, walking and motorcycling.

Oliver was in his capacity as Bishop of Hereford from September 1996 until his retirement as Bishop of Hereford as a clergyman Lord the House of Lords until the end of November 2003.
