John P. Cochran

John P. Cochran ( born February 7, 1809 in Middletown, Delaware, † December 27, 1898 ) was an American politician and 1875-1879 Governor of the State of Delaware.

Early years and political rise

John Cochran grew up as farmers and landowners on in his home. Little is known about his schooling. In 1838 he became a representative of the New Castle County at the Financial Court of Delaware. This office he held for eight years. In the following years he went back to his private business. Cochran appeared only in 1874 back into the political spotlight when he was nominated by the Democratic Party as a candidate for the upcoming gubernatorial election. He won the next election with 53% of the vote against Isaac Jump, the candidate of the Republicans.

Governor of Delaware

John Cochran began his four -year term on 19 January 1875. During this time, he campaigned for the improvement of the school system. At that time a State Board of Education ( State Board of Education ) was launched and created the position of School Board (State Superintendent of Schools free ). The proposal of the Governor to organize the distribution of seats in the House of Representatives from Delaware new to the districts, failed because of the opposition of this body. Cochran's intention was to strengthen his home district, the New Castle County in the legislature. Even under Governor Cochran of black people were denied their civil rights. This condition is expected to continue until the second half of the 20th century.

John Cochran's term as governor ended January 21, 1879. Thereafter, he retired from politics and devoted himself to his private business. These were predominantly agricultural concerns. John Cochran died in December 1898. He was married twice and had from his second marriage to Mary Turmlin six children. His first marriage with Eliza Polk had remained childless.
