John Patrick Williams

Pat Williams ( born October 30, 1937 in Helena, Montana ) is an American politician. Between 1979 and 1997 he represented the state of Montana in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Pat Williams attended the public schools of his home. He then continued his education 1956-1957 at the University of Montana and later at the University of Denver in Colorado. From 1961 to 1969 he was a member of the National Guard. Later he worked as a teacher.

Williams was a member of the Democratic Party. Between 1967 and 1969 he was a delegate in the House of Representatives from Montana. Between 1969 and 1971 he was assistant to the Congressman and U.S. Senator John Melcher. From 1972 to 1978 he was a member of an advisory committee of the Governor of Montana. In the congressional elections of 1978, Williams was chosen as the successor to the exchanged in the Senate Max Baucus in the U.S. House of Representatives. Four years earlier he had lost in the Democratic Primary or against Baucus. After several re- elections in which he came to a vote share of 60 percent in the rule, Williams was able to exercise this mandate between January 1979 and January 3, 1997 3, until he no longer took for re-election. He fought for environmental protection, higher taxation for businesses and a cut in the defense budget. He now teaches at the University of Montana.
