John Prentice (footballer born 1926)

John Prentice ( born 1926 in Shotts, Lanarkshire, Scotland, † 10 February 2006 in Australia) was a Scottish football player and coach.

Career

Player

Prentice came in 1944 by the amateur club Carluke Rovers to Heart of Midlothian, where he could never prevail. Six years later he was hired by the Rangers. In 1956 he moved within the Scottish Premier League to FC Falkirk. Here Prentice was also captain. In 1959, he played one year with FC Dumbarton, before in 1960 he ended his career as a player.

Coach

In April 1960, the Scot took over for the last two games of the season FC Arbroath in the Scottish First Division. In his first season he led Arbroath on the 12th place in the table. In 1962 he left the club and was manager of FC Clyde. In March 1966, he was team leader of the Scottish national team and sparked from Jock Stein, who in addition to his work as a club coach at Celtic Glasgow also coached Scotland. But Prentice was only six months coach and then returned to club football. In 1966 he took over his former club FC Falkirk. Between 1968 and 1971 he coached Dundee United. From 1971 up to end of his career in 1975 he was again trainer of FC Falkirk. In 1987 he moved to Australia, where he died of a brain tumor in 2006 at the age of 79 years. Prentice had a son named Alan.
