John Pritchard (conductor)

John Michael Pritchard ( born February 5, 1921 in London, † December 5, 1989 in Daly City ) was an English conductor.

Pritchard worked since 1947 at the Glyndebourne Festival, was from 1969 to 1978 whose music director and later chief conductor of the Cologne Opera. He has conducted in the opera houses of Vienna, London ( Covent Garden), Chicago, New York, Brussels and San Francisco.

Since 1962 he is Commander of the Order of the British Kingdom. In 1983 he was knighted. At the end of his career he was appointed music director of the San Francisco Opera, a position that was created especially for him. Pritchard was recognized for his rehearsals of Mozart operas, as well as for his connoisseurship in contemporary music.
