John R. Eden

John Rice Eden ( born 1 February 1826 at Bath County, Kentucky, † June 9, 1909 in Sullivan, Illinois ) was an American politician. Between 1863 and 1887 he represented several times the state of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Even in his youth, John Eden came with his parents to Indiana, where he attended the public schools. After a subsequent law degree in 1853 and its recent approval as a lawyer, he started in Sullivan to work in this profession. Between 1856 and 1860 he served as a prosecutor in the 17th Judicial District of Illinois. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party. In the congressional elections of 1862 he was in the seventh election district of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of James Carroll Robinson on March 4, 1867. Since he has not been confirmed in 1864, he was initially able to do only one term in Congress until March 3, 1865. This was marked by the events of the Civil War. In November 1868, he ran for governor of Illinois, but was defeated by Republican John M. Palmer with 44:56 percent of the vote.

1872 Eden was selected in the 15th district of his state in Congress, where he spent 1879 three other legislative periods after two elections between 4 March 1873 to 3 March. Since 1875 he was chairman of the Committee on War Claims. In 1878, he was not nominated by his party for re-election. He then practiced as a lawyer again. In 1884, he was elected in the 17th District of Illinois for the last time in Congress. Between March 4, 1885 to March 3, 1887, he graduated from another term. For the elections of 1886, he sought unsuccessfully to re Nomierung his party.

After the final end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives John Eden again worked as a lawyer. He died on 9 June 1909 in Sullivan.
