John R. Steelman

John Roy Steelman ( born June 23, 1900 in Thornton, Arkansas, † July 14, 1999 in Naples, Florida) was an American sociologist, economist, professor and chief of staff of the White House.

Biography

After school he studied at Henderson Brown College in Arkadelphia and acquired there in 1922 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). A subsequent post-graduate studies at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, he graduated in 1924 with a Master of Arts (MA ) from. In 1928, he finally earned a Philosophiae Doctor ( Ph.D.) at the University of North Carolina and was followed up in 1934 as a professor of sociology and economics at the Alabama College operates.

In 1934 he joined the government service and was an employee in the Ministry of Labor of the United States. At first he was Commissioner ( Commissioner) of the Arbitration Service ( U.S. Conciliation Service ) and then 1936-1937 Special Assistant to Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins. Most recently he was until the end of the Second World War in 1945 director of the conciliation service.

In 1945 he was a special assistant to White House staff, before U.S. President Harry S. Truman in 1946 appointed him the first chief of staff of the White House ( White House Chief of Staff ). This office in the expanded cabinet Truman he held until the end of Truman's presidency on January 20, 1953.

He then worked for several years as a consultant in the private sector as well as a publisher.
