John Reid, Baron Reid of Cardowan

John Reid, Baron Reid of Cardowan ( born May 8, 1947 in Bellshill, Lanarkshire, Scotland ) is a British Labour Party politician, the minister was not only repeatedly, but since 2007, is chairman of the football club Celtic FC.

Biography

After attending the St. Patrick's High School in Coatbridge, he studied at The Open University, before he completed his studies in history at the University of Stirling, where a Bachelor of Arts (BA History ) acquired. A subsequent post-graduate studies in economic history at the University of Stirling, he finished with a Philosophiae Doctor ( Ph.D.).

Reid, who first became involved in the Communist Party of Great Britain, later became an employee in the research department of the Labour Party and was last 1983-1985 Advisor to the then Party leader Neil Kinnock.

In 1987 he was even selected as the Labour candidate for the first time deputies in the lower house (House of Commons ) and represented in the first ten years the constituency of Motherwell North. After that, he was between 1997 and 2005 deputy in the lower house in the constituency of Hamilton North and Bellshill and represented from 2005 to 2010 the constituency Airdrie and Shotts in the House of Commons.

After the election of the Labour Party in the general election on May 1, 1997, he was Minister of State for the Armed Forces before he was from 1998 to 1999 Minister of State for Transport. After a further reshuffle, he was appointed in 1999 by Prime Minister Tony Blair as Minister of Scotland for the first time to the Cabinet and was followed on January 25, 2001 to October 24, 2002 Minister of Northern Ireland.

After first minister without portfolio was before he briefly Lord President of the Council and at the same time leader of the majority faction of the Labour Party in the House ( Leader of the House of Commons ) was in 2003. Most recently, John Reid 2006 Interior Minister ( Home Secretary ) and has held this post until the end of the term of office of Tony Blair in June 2007.

Since 2007 he has been chairman of the football club Celtic FC.

In the general election on 6 May 2010, he did not run again for the House and was replaced in the election as deputies of his assistant Pamela Nash, who is currently the youngest member of the House ( Baby of the House ). After retiring from the House of Commons he was even raised on in May 2010 as a life peer with the title Baron Reid of Cardowan to the peerage
