John River (Alaska)

The John River is a river in the Interior of Alaska.

It rises at Anaktuvuk Pass in the Brooks Range, flows south and empties near the Arctic Circle in the Koyukuk River.

The John River flows at the headwaters in the Brooks Range by broad glaciated valleys. In the lowlands along the lower reaches limit over long distances bluff the river bed.

The Arctic caribou herd uses the valley of the river during their migration. The tragacanth Art William 's Milk Vetch is found only in this region.

Archaeological finds prove a far reaching back use of Anaktuvuk Pass by Alaska Natives.

The 84 km long part of the John River in Gates -of -the- Arctic National Park in 1980 reported by the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act as a National Wild and Scenic River under the administration of the National Park Service.
