John Ross Robertson

John Ross Robertson ( born December 28, 1841 in Toronto, Ontario, † May 31, 1918 ) was a Canadian publisher, philanthropist, politician and hockey official.

Life

In 1867 he founded the Toronto Evening Telegram, a conservative newspaper, which was published until 1971. Although he had never played hockey, he showed keen interest in the sport. Robertson was against the professionalization of hockey and campaigned for the preservation of amateur sport. In 1896 he was elected as a Conservative Member of Parliament in the Canadian House of Commons. In 1899 he was elected president of the Ontario Hockey Association, and remained so until 1905. Two years later he donated trophies for the winners of the OHA. Later he became honorary president of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Organization. The championship trophy of the Ontario Hockey League, which he had originally donated himself, was named in his honor J. Ross Robertson Cup.

In 1947 he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
