John S. McKiernan

John Sammon McKiernan (* October 15, 1911 in Providence, Rhode Iceland, † March 9, 1997 in Warwick, Rhode Iceland ) was an American politician and 1950-1951 Governor of the State of Rhode Iceland.

Early years

John McKiernan attended until 1934, the University of Notre Dame and then studied until 1937 at the Boston University law. After qualifying as a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. He was legal advisor to the service management committee (Civil Service Commission ). Between 1942 and 1943 he was deputy attorney in Providence. In the meantime, he served during the Second World War as a soldier in the U.S. Army.

Political career

John McKiernan was a member of the Democratic Party. In 1946 he was elected Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Iceland. In this capacity he was also president of the State Senate. In this body he gave in 1949 the deciding vote to a bill from the first time in over ten years back gave the Democrats control the Senate committees. After Governor John O. Pastore resigned from his post to take his seat in the U.S. Senate, McKiernan had to finish the unexpired term as governor as his deputy. These were, in this case about two weeks between December 19 1950 and January 2, 1951. McKiernan has not even applied for the post of governor. Instead, he was re-elected several times to the Lieutenant Governor. This office he held from 1951 to 1956. This year, he resigned from this post because he had been appointed a judge of the Superior Court ( Superior Court ).

Family and death

John McKiernan was married to Elizabeth St. Pierre. He died on 9 March 1997, Warwick.
