John S. Monagan

Stephen John Monagan ( born December 23, 1911 in Waterbury, Connecticut, † October 23, 2005 in Washington DC ) was an American politician. Between 1959 and 1973 he represented the state of Connecticut in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Monagan attended the common schools and then studied until 1933 at Dartmouth College in Hanover (New Hampshire). After a subsequent study at the Law School of Harvard University and its made ​​in 1938 admitted to the bar, he began practicing in his new profession in Waterbury.

Monagan was a member of the Democratic Party. Between 1940 and 1943 he was a member and chairman of the City Council of Waterbury; 1943 to 1948, he served as mayor of this city. He was also a board member of the Waterbury Savings Bank. In the years 1944, 1948, 1960, 1964 and 1968 was Monagan a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions relevant.

1958 Monagan was selected in the fifth electoral district of Connecticut in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington. There he entered on January 3, 1959, the succession of Republican James T. Patterson, whom he had defeated in the election. After six re- election he was able to complete in Congress until January 3, 1973 seven contiguous legislatures. In this time were, among others, the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War. In the elections of 1972, Monagan was defeated by Republican Ronald A. Sarasin. He then worked again as a lawyer. He died in October 2005 in Washington.
