John Sackville (died 1557)

John Sackville (* March 17, 1484, † September 27, 1557 in Withyham, East Sussex ) was a Member of Parliament for East Grinstead and a local administrator in Essex, Sussex and Surrey. His first wife was Margaret Boleyn, aunt of Queen Anne Boleyn, second wife of Henry VIII, and a great-aunt of Queen Elizabeth I.

Family

John Sackville was the first son of the standing in public service Esquire Richard Sackville († 1524) and his second wife, Isabel, daughter of John Digges of Barham in Kent. John had three brothers and seven sisters. His father Richard was landowners in the counties of Sussex and Essex. This wealth probably came from an inheritance of Isabel's line.

He himself had with his first wife, Margaret, three sons and three daughters, his second marriage with Anne Torrell remained childless.

Life and career

From 1513 to 1524 was Sackville Justice of the Peace in Essex. With the death of his father, his activities widened until his own death in Sussex and Surrey. His relationship to his influential brother in law from his first marriage Thomas Boleyn, John apparently not used to gain an advantage. In the last decade Boleyn, fell as its star, too close public contact would anyway have been harmful to John. John's son, Richard II (1507-1566) was, however, more susceptible to these temptations.

Sackville resided for the last part of his life in Chiddingly in Sussex, where he made his last will on 1 July 1556. Executors were his wife and his son Nicholas Pelham. Sackville was buried on 5 October in the Parish of Withyham. For reasons that are unclear, Sackville leaves in his will any mention away in favor of his eldest son and his heirs. After a court order from October 1559 he won the case and received his compulsory portion.
