John Satterthwaite

John Richard Satterthwaite ( born November 17, 1925 in Whicham, Cumberland ) is a British Anglican theologian. He was Bishop of Fulham (1970-1980) and from 1980 to 1993 Bishop of Gibraltar in the Church of England.

Satterthwaite was born the son of William and Clare Satterthwaite. He was a typical country boy, who attended local schools. He went to the Grammar School in Millom Millom in Cumbria and studied at the University of Leeds later. In preparation for the priesthood, he attended the College of the Resurrection in Mirfield in West Yorkshire. His church service as a priest, he began as a vicar ( Curate ) on the St Barnabas 's Church in Carlisle and at St Michael Paternoster Royal Church in the City of London. Then he was parish priest (Vicar ) the Guild Church in St Dunstan -in-the -West. From 1955 to 1970 he worked in the service of the Archbishop of Canterbury at Lambeth Palace. He was secretary and later Secretary General of the Council on Foreign Relations of the Church of England. 1967-1968 He was the first joint secretary of the Anglican - Roman Catholic International Commission ( ARCIC ) in the Joint Preparatory Commission.

In 1970 he was ordained a bishop. He was from 1970 to 1980 Bishop of Fulham, and thereby assumed as suffragan bishop without their own diocese the Bishop of London. In his role as Bishop of Fulham Satterthwaite was for the Anglican communities in Northern and Central Europe ( Jurisdiction of North and Central Europe ) responsible. His official title was " Bishop of Fulham and Gibraltar ". In September 1973, he consecrated in his jurisdiction as bishop of Fulham and Gibraltar, the newly built Holy Trinity Church in Cannes.

1980, after introduction of the new Diocese of Gibraltar in Europe ( Diocese of Gibraltar in Europe, in short: Diocese in Europe), he became Bishop in Europe with the official title of " Bishop of Gibraltar in Europe".

On September 30, 1993 Satterthwaite went as Bishop of Gibraltar into retirement. His successor as Bishop of Gibraltar was John William Hind. Since his retirement, he lives in Carlisle.
