John Scott (Pennsylvania)

John Scott ( born July 24, 1824 in Alexandria, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, † November 29, 1896 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician ( Republican), who represented the state of Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate.

Life

After visiting the Marshall College in Chambersburg John Scott studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1846 and commenced practice as a lawyer then in Huntingdon. Between 1846 and 1849 he was a prosecutor in Huntingdon County; in 1851 he was a member of the local Tax Commission.

Scott's political career began in 1862 with membership of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. There, his father had already sat from 1819 to 1820; then was John Scott Sr. 1829-1831 deputy in the U.S. House of Representatives. 1868 applied the younger Scott is one of the two seats of Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate and was successful, and he became the successor of Charles R. Buckalew Democrats in Washington on March 4, 1869. In the Senate, he was faced with, among others, the Committee on Claims. After six years in office, Scott no longer stand for re- election; He returned to Pennsylvania and worked from 1875 to 1877 in Pittsburgh as General Counsel of Railway Company Pennsylvania Railroad. After that, he was still legally active until 1895.
