John Stenhouse

John Stenhouse ( born October 31, 1809 in Glasgow, † December 13, 1880 ) was a Scottish chemist.

John Stenhouse was the eldest son of William Stenhouse and his wife Elizabeth Currie in Glasgow to the world. He studied with Thomas Thomson and Thomas Graham in Glasgow and at Justus von Liebig in Giessen. In 1839 he returned to Glasgow. From 1851 to 1857 he was lecturer at the Chemical St Bartholomew's Hospital in London.

Stenhouse discovered the chloropicrin and led a 1854 one of the first respirators. He also isolated several alkaloids such as sparteine ​​from Scotch broom.

Friedrich August Kekulé von Stradonitz was 1854/55 assistant in his Department.

In 1848 he was elected as a member of the Royal Society, which honored him in 1871 with the Royal Medal.

Stenhouse died on 13 December 1880 and was buried in the High Church New Cemetery in Glasgow.
