John Stewart, Earl of Mar (d. 1503)

John Stewart (* between July 16 1479 and July 12, 1480, † March 11, 1502 / 1503), Earl of Mar and Garioch, was a Scottish nobleman.

Life

His father was King James III. , His mother was Margaret of Denmark, daughter of the Danish King Christian I.. As the third son of the royal couple to him in 1485 (or 1486 ) of the title Earl of Mar and Garioch was awarded on March 2, together with Kildrummy Castle and the associated lands owned by the crown.

About his life little is known. From 1490 he was of the family of Alexander Home, 2nd Earl of Home reared; from 1493 the prior of Torphichen is also listed as his teacher and educator. For various royal documents can also be seen that his elder brother, King James IV took over the administration of the estate of his minor brother.

John got along with his older brother well, as can be seen from various reports about the occasional royal games card games. The news of John's sudden death reached the King on a trip in southern Galloway. John was not married and had no illegitimate heirs.
