John Tavares (ice hockey)

John Tavares ( born September 20, 1990 in Mississauga, Ontario ) is a Canadian professional ice hockey player standing since 2009 with the New York Islanders in the National Hockey League contract.

Career

Tavares is the youngest player that was selected in each OHL Draft. In the OHL Priority Selection 2005, he was selected in the first position of the Oshawa Generals and was pursuant to an exemption of the first 15 -year-old, who was employed in the OHL. Tavares is regarded as particularly talented, which he put through his performances in the OHL proof.

In his second year in Oshawa the then 16 -year-old broke even some held by Wayne Gretzky Canadian Junior records. At the end of the season he was voted the best player in the OHL and CHL.

In autumn 2007 his agent tried the National Hockey League to convince him already allow for the NHL Entry Draft in 2008 with an exemption. All available players for the NHL Entry Draft in 2008 must have been born before September 15, 1990, Tavares birthday is but five days later on September 20.

NHL Entry Draft 2009 Tavares was selected as the first overall by the New York Islanders. In the first season, John Tavares was one of the top performers of the Islanders. Reach him 24 goals and 30 assists and was the best scorer of his team. However, the playoffs they could not reach. At season's end, he was elected to the NHL All- Rookie Team.

Due to the NHL lockout, he played from September 2012 for the SC Bern of the National League A in Switzerland on the position of the center. This commitment was initially limited to two months or until the re- start of the NHL season.

Internationally

Tavares represented his native country for the first time at the U18 World Youth Championship in 2006. During his junior time he also took part in the Super Series 2007. Also, the attacker took the Canadian selection at the Junior World Championships in 2008 and 2009. Tavares won it twice in a row, the gold medal and was honored with several individual awards 2009. In addition to the award as the most valuable player of the tournament he was also chosen as the best striker and the All-Star team in the world championship.

Tavares was appointed to the Canadian squad for the World Ice Hockey Championship 2010. During the tournament he scored seven goals and was top scorer of the World Cup, but the Canadian selection missed a medal rank and failed in the quarterfinals against Russia. 2014 he was with the Canadian National Team Olympic champion.
