John Taylor Hamilton

John Taylor Hamilton ( * October 16, 1843 in Geneseo, Henry County, Illinois; † January 25, 1925 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa ) was an American politician. Between 1891 and 1893 he represented the state of Iowa in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Hamilton attended the public schools of his home including the Geneseo Academy. In 1868 he moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he traded agricultural commodities. In 1878 he was elected mayor of Cedar Rapids. Between 1882 and 1884 was a member of the Hamilton County Council of Linn County. He was also president of the Cedar Rapids Savings Bank and the Electric Lights Company.

Politically, Hamilton was a member of the Democratic Party. Between 1885 and 1891 he sat as an MP in the House of Representatives from Iowa; there he was temporarily President of the House. In 1890 he was in the fifth electoral district of Iowa in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Daniel Kerr on March 4, 1891. Since he Republican Robert G. Cousins ​​defeated in the elections of 1892, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1893.

After the end of his time in the House of Representatives, he continued his business career in Cedar Rapids. He has worked in various industries. In 1899 he became president of the Merchants National Bank. Between 1906 and 1909 he was a member of the Audit Committee of the State of Iowa. In 1914, John Hamilton ran unsuccessfully for the office of Governor of Iowa. He was defeated by incumbent George W. Clarke. John Hamilton died on January 25, 1925 in Cedar Rapids and was also buried there.
