John Tyler Rich

John Tyler Rich ( born April 23 1841 in Conneautville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, † March 28, 1926 in Saint Petersburg, Florida ) was an American politician and from 1893 to 1897 the 23 governor of Michigan.

Early years

John Tyler Rich was named after the office -down shortly before his birth, U.S. President John Tyler. About Vermont, the family arrived in 1848 to Elba in Michigan. Young John attended the local schools. After school he was employed in agriculture.

Political rise

John Rich was a member of the Republican Party. His political rise began in 1869 with his election to the County Council in Lapeer County. This mandate he held until 1872 Between 1873 and 1881 he was a delegate in the House of Representatives from Michigan.; during the last two years, he was even President of that body. Beginning of 1881 he was for a short time member of the National Senate, before he entered the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington in April 1881. There he had to finish the term of office of the Conger retired Omar D.. Until March 3, 1883, he remained in Congress. Between 1887 and 1891 was John Rich Railway Supervisor ( Railroad Commissioner) of the state government of Michigan. In 1884 and 1892 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention.

Governor of Michigan

In 1892, Rich was selected as the candidate of his party for the new governor. After a re-election in 1894, he could serve until January 1, 1897. During this time he had to deal with a strike of railway workers and another strike of the miners an iron mine. It was then that three employees of the Electoral Commission had to be dismissed because of election fraud in a vote on a raise.

Further CV

After the end of his governorship John Rich remained politically active. Between 1898 and 1906 he was Head of the Federal Customs Service in Detroit. Between January 1908 and January 1909, he served as Minister of Finance of Michigan ( State Treasurer ). Between 1908 and 1913 he directed the customs authorities in Port Huron. John Rich died in March 1926. He was married to Lucretia Winship.
