John Victor Mackay

John Victor Mackay ( born July 13, 1891September 8, 1945 in Los Angeles, California ) was an American art director and production designer, who was nominated three times for the Academy Award for Best Production Design.

Life

Mackay began his career as an art director and production designer in the film industry in Hollywood in 1937 with an adaptation of Dick Tracy Ralph Byrd in the title role. During his six years in the film industry he worked until 1943 at the scenic features of over ninety films.

His first of three Oscar nominations in the category Best Production Design Mackay received at the Academy Awards in 1938 for musical comedy Manhattan Merry- Go-Round (1937 ) by Charles Reisner with Phil Regan, Leo Carrillo and Ann Dvorak in the lead roles. His second nomination for an Academy Award for Best Production Design followed in 1940 for revenge for the Alamo (1939 ), a film adaptation of the life of Sam Houston, directed by George Nichols Jr. with Richard Dix, Edward Ellis and Gail Patrick.

The last Oscar nomination for Best Production Design got Mackay at the Academy Awards in 1941 for the black and white film Black Command ( Dark Command, 1940), a Western Romance by Raoul Walsh starring John Wayne, Claire Trevor and Walter Pidgeon in the lead roles.
