John Vining

John Middleton Vining ( born December 23, 1758 in Dover, Delaware, † February 1802 in Wilmington, Delaware ) was an American politician of the Federalist Party. From 1789 to 1798 he sat for the U.S. state of Delaware in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.

Early life and family

Vining was born in Dover, the son of John Vining and Phoebe Wynkoop. His father was a prominent lawyer and landowner, the Chief Justice in Delaware later. His father died when Vining was 11 years old. 1790 Vining married Anna Maria Seaton. They had four sons together. In 1800, after the last birth, his wife died at the birth of consequences.

Political career

Vining studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1782. He settled in Dover and quickly became one of the most prominent lawyers in the city. Because of its prominence and popularity Vining in 1784 for Delaware elected to the Continental Congress. This marked the beginning of his political career. Until 1786, he sat in the Continental Congress. Between 1787 and 1789 he was then a member of the House of Representatives from Delaware.

1788 Vining ran successfully for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. He even managed to re-election. In 1793 he spent a year as a member of the Senate from Delaware. In 1793 he moved within the Congress in the Senate, where he served until his resignation in 1798. Following the resignation he retired from public life completely back.

Death

Vining died in February 1802 in Wilmington. He was buried at Christ Episcopal Church Cemetery in his hometown.
