John W. Caldwell

John William Caldwell ( born January 15, 1837 in Russellville, Logan County, Kentucky; † July 4, 1903 ) was an American politician. Between 1877 and 1883 he represented the state of Kentucky in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Caldwell attended the public schools of his home and then the Bethel College. In 1850 he moved with his uncle in Texas, where he worked on a farm. In addition, he worked among other things as a surveyor. After a few years he returned to Kentucky. After studying law and qualifying as a lawyer, he began to work in his new profession. During the Civil War Caldwell rose to become a colonel in the army of the Confederacy. After the war he began in 1865 his lawyer in Russellville continues. After that, he was district judge in Logan County.

Caldwell was a member of the Democratic Party. In the congressional elections of 1876 he was in the third electoral district of Kentucky in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Charles W. Milliken on March 4, 1877. After two re- election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1883 three legislative periods. For the elections of 1882 Caldwell declined to run again. In the following years he was president of the Logan County Bank. He died on July 4, 1903 in Russellville.
