John W. Candler

John Wilson Candler ( born February 10, 1828 in Boston, Massachusetts, † March 16, 1903 in Providence, Rhode Iceland ) was an American politician. Between 1881 and 1883, and again from 1889 to 1891, he represented the state of Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Candler attended the Marblehead Academy and the Dummer Academy in Massachusetts. Later he was engaged in trade. He maintained, among others, trade relations with the East and West Indies and South America. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Republican Party launched a political career. In 1866 he became a deputy in the House of Representatives from Massachusetts. Candler also served as Chairman of the Prison Commission of the State of Massachusetts. He was also president of the Chamber of Commerce of Boston and of the Commercial Club of Boston.

In the congressional elections of 1882 Candler in the eighth constituency of Massachusetts was in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of William Claflin on March 4, 1883. Since he has not been confirmed in 1882, he was initially able to do only one term in Congress until March 3, 1883. In the 1888 elections Candler was elected as the successor to Edward Burnett in the ninth district of his state again in Congress, where he was able to complete a more legislative period between March 4, 1889 March 3, 1891. In 1890 he was not re-elected again.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives John Candler took his previous activities in the commercial again. In 1893, he withdrew into retirement. He died on March 16, 1903 in Providence, and was buried in Cambridge.
