John W. Hutchinson

John Woodside Hutchinson ( born April 10, 1939 in Hartford, Connecticut ) is an American engineer scientist.

Hutchinson earned his undergraduate degree in 1960 as an engineer at Lehigh University in 1963 and his doctorate from Harvard University with Bernard Budiansky. In 1964 he became assistant professor, associate professor in 1968 and 1969, Gordon McKay Professor of Applied Mechanics at Harvard.

He is known for contributions to the theory of elasto-plastic fracture mechanics ( Hutch Sinon -Rice - Rosengren theory, 1968).

Hutchinson looked at recently among other things with the use of plasticity theory on a microscopic scale and mechanical problems with ceramic protective layers against heat (thermal barrier coatings, tuberculosis ).

In 1991 he received the William Prager Medal and the Arpad Nadai Award, 1982 George R. Irwin Medal and 2002, the Timoshenko Medal. In 2012 he was awarded the Ludwig- Prandtl -Ring.
