John W. Taylor (politician)

John W. Taylor ( born March 26, 1784 in Charlton, Saratoga County, New York, † September 18, 1854 in Cleveland, Ohio) was an American politician and from 1820 to 1821 and from 1825 to 1827 two-time Speaker of the House.

Early years

Taylor was home schooled, but graduated in 1803 from Union College in Schenectady. He studied law and got his license in 1807. He then worked for a time as a lawyer. In the years 1812 and 1813, he was a member of the New York State Assembly. In 1813 he was elected for the first time in the House of Representatives of the United States.

Policy

Taylor was elected in 1813 as a Democratic Republican to the 13th and in the next four following conventions. In the three succeeding Congresses, the 18th to the 20th ( 1823-1829 ), he was chosen as the Adams - Clay Republican, then followed by two terms of office ( 1829-1833 ) as a member of the National Republican Party. The last two parties do not differ, contributed only other names during their brief existence. Overall, he was 20 years in Congress. In the 16th and 19th he was Speaker of the House. In the election for the 23rd Congress in 1832 he was not re-elected, and then continued his work as a lawyer continued.

Later years

After the election defeat Taylor moved to Ballston Spa in Saratoga County, to work again as a lawyer, as he had done before his political career. In the years 1840 and 1841 he was a member of the Senate of the State of New York, but resigned in 1841 as a consequence of stroke. In 1843 he moved to Cleveland, where he died on 18 September 1854. He is buried in the City Cemetery in Ballston Spa.
